Geek Market 2014!

I got all dressed up and went to see all the local fun!

Giant Jenga! (And I wasn't even the one to knock it down.)

This weekend I attended the Ottawa Geek Market. The Geek Market allows local vendors and artists to sell their goods to the nerd community. The vendors included toys, art, costumes, clothing, books, comics, manga, vintage video games, new video games,  board games, card games, LEGO, and more. Cosplay is encouraged, and many steampunks, goths and lolitas were also in attendance. It was great seeing some of the local pro-cosplayers such as Kudrel and Detailed-Illusion. Several panels and workshops were held, such as "cosplay ettiquette" and "plushie making."

 There was also a gameboard section where you try out all kinds of strange games and even play giant games (like giant jenga!). AND 8-bit Bazaar was there with screens and consoles galore with all kinds of different games.

Do not want: Doc Marten Sandals

These actually exist. 

The Bernadette boots combine the worst features of boots and sandals into an unfortunate franken-shoe.

The thing is, I love combat boots. And Doc Martens normally produce fantastic looking boots and shoes that I would love to wear. But these are not that. These are combat boots that look like they wear half eaten by a dog, with large sections missing. And then someone decided to pass that off as a sandal. I'm really disappointed that Doc Martens would produce such an unfortunate shoe. Not that they are the only company to produce the awful design...

This is a trend that I'd like to see pass soon please.

Usually, I'm not a fan of sandals. They do not protect your feet; they generally provide an uncomfortable, flimsy walking experience; I hate not being able to wear socks; etc. But they do have some upsides, and in the right context (at the beach or pool) they aren't a horrible thing. They let your feet breath and are great for the summer.

Boots, on the other hand, are my go to shoe always. They provide ultimate sturdy travelling experience; they are perfect protection for clubs and shows; and provide warmth on cold days. Unfortunately they do not breath (prepare to suffer in the summer); once wet they take forever to dry; and if you wear them to the beach they will be awful and fill with sand.

These awful shoes/sandals/boots seem to combine the worst aspects from both shoe types. They don't look like they breath well, they look like they'd take forever to dry one wet and fill with sand easily (so the beach is out). They also look flimsy and hard to walk and run in, provide no foot protection (so no good for clubs and shows either).

Do you see my issue with these?


Personally, I would never wear these. I just really can't see these being comfortable.  But hey, that's just me.

In response to a comment left on my DIY to do list by 1666 X 30, here are six ways I would suggest wearing a spiked bra.

Personally, I would like to wear it with my underbust corset, but I know that's not for every one. Spiked bras are pretty versatile though. They are easy to wear under an open jacket or vest with jeans (depending on how much skin you want to show), but can also be worn under loose fitting / off-the-shoulder shirts. Get an over sized t and snip until it fits!

6 Trends from the Mainstream that I don't hate!

1. Beyonce - I grew up on Destiny's Child, of course I love her. The music is catchy and her videos are creative. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure. Don't judge me.
2. Pastels / White clothing - Aside from the pastel goth look, pastels are pretty trendy as of late; they are popping up in many spring 2014 runway shows. And while pastels and white clothing really aren't my go-to choice for clothing, I do sort of like the look of an entirely white or off-white outfit. It's kind of ghostly and ethereal, and makes me think of banshees and similar spooks.
3. Bold or Neon Eye Makeup - Goths and the Alternative scene can probably lay claim to the heavy make-up, black eyeliner cat-eye trend. But I do enjoy some of the more neon styles being seen lately. The neon colours offer a change, yet still possess the same extreme look. And I like that.
4. Agate/ Gemstone Decor - Who doesn't love giant rocks. 'Nough Said.
5. Neon Lipstick - Similar to the eye makeup trends, I really just like the alternative to typical lip colours. It can be hard to find a bright pastel or neon lip colour that matches your complexions, but I think its a matter of find what works for you. I'd like to experiment with weird colours like this. Except for orange. I dislike orange lipstick a lot
6. Ear cuffs - As someone with no piercings (gasp I know right?!) ear cuffs have opened a whole new world of jewellery that I never had access to before. And I love them for that.(I dunno why I never got my ears pierced. It seemed like too much effort at the time and now I'm just not motivated enough to do it. )

Pink Goths: What are your thoughts on Pastel Goths?

I thought the poem was fitting.

I decided to talk about pastel goth today.

Basically pastel goth is goth with baby blues, lilac and pastel colors mixed in.See Below:

I feel it is heavily inspired by traditional goth, fairy kei and Lolita styles. However, tt strays away from the extreme accessories of decora and fairy kei and is lighter than traditional goth. 

At first I was not a fan of pastel goth, but I have to say it's kind of growing on me. Gasp! I've even acquired pink clothing.

I know many condemn this sort of style to "Nu-Goth" or "Hipster-Goth." While some openly embrace the Nu-Goth style and label, it is generally seen as an insult to be described as such. to me, the label seems arbitrary... I've never been able to figure out what the difference between a nu-goth and a regular goth is. Except the nu-goths often have less dramatic (unteased, not necessarily black) hair....

Anywho. I kinda like Pastel Goth.
What are your thoughts? Is pink and pastels your nightmare or delight?
