This has nothing to do with alternative things. Unless you count the occasional sense of nihilism and chaos that is stereotypical of the goth and Punk scene. Either way, I've been feeling a bit out of control of my life. Here's the things I did to make me self feel slightly better.

Create a Budget:
I made a spreadsheet to help myself make sure I was saving the right amount to meet all the necessities and taxes.
Is money stressing you out? Even if it isn't the direct source of stress in your life right now, chances are it's something floating around in the back of your head. Money management is one extra source of stress regardless of your situation. If things seem spiralling out of control, then money is the first place to start to feel in control again. Maybe its social situations stressing you out, plans for your future, event planning ,trip planning ,work things going awry etc. The trick here is to use your budget as the pillar of solidity in your life. If you can get your budget and spending under control, then you will have one thing to fall back on as your “at least I'm doing okay here.” A balanced budget is solid proof that you will be okay, you will make ends meet, you will get through the year. It may also reveal some areas where you need to cut back. Can't afford that trip you're stressing about? Now you can plan exactly how to save to afford it. Apartment issues driving you crazy? The budget will help you estimate how much you can afford to pay to get out of the lease or how much to save in order to afford to relocate to a nicer place. Social life getting out of control? Use the budget to see how much you can really justify on spending on crazy outings and use this as a way to learn to say no when you financially can't take on more.

Make a Schedule:
I make lists of to do's, but I started putting all events and deadlines into a digital calender that I can access anywhere. No more forgetting my paper agenda.
Time is another key factor in maintaining control over your life. Think of a schedule as a budget for your time. You only have so much time to give out, and you are allowed to be selective about what you spend it on and who you spend it with. Use your schedule to get on top of deadlines, plan events and dates well in advance, and quickly avoid time conflicts. Remember to schedule “you-time” – time at the desk to address important tasks, time to do your laundry, time to wash the floors and bathroom, time to do the dishes, time to exercise and time to eat. If you aren't taking care of core self care tasks and chores then it's very easy for your life to feel at crisis. Just like the money budget, the schedule can be a useful tool for learning to say no to people / activities when too many things are piling up.

Do something to your appearance:
I got a hair cut, threw-out old ratty clothes that I had been holding onto, and got some soap that was better for my skin.
Your body is entirely your own. You can do what ever you wish to change your look. Try dying your hair a new color, try getting a hair cut, try a new make-up routine, try going make up free, try a new outfit. Go as bold or as temporary as you'd like. Even if it's just for a night, changing your appearance can be a way to reclaim control over a simple aspect of your life. Your outside appearance is entirely in your control, regardless of other events in your life.

Evaluate your situation and current events. Take Action Now.
I learned everything I possibly could about the issue and started my own action plan to eliminate the problems.
Is there a specific event that triggered this feeling of being out of control? Or is it a stream of several different events causing you anguish? Lots of things can happen that will make your life feel absolutely wild. Lose your job, suffer through a break up, face a basement flood, face a bug infestation, face planning for a future that seems totally uncertain after graduation. Sometimes major events, (or even minor events) happen that are 100% out of your control. Evaluating how you got here is important, learning from past mistakes that may have contributed to the issue is incredibly important. But that point of reflection should occur once you've reached momentary stability. If the situation (or crisis) is getting out of control then at this point there is no use sitting around wallowing in all the things you wish you did differently to better prepare for the situation. Instead, take action. Look at the things you can do right now to fix the problem. Accept what is out of your control (you can't change how others feel, you can't stop the storm from damaging things, you can't stop bugs from hitching a ride on your neighbor's dog and making a home in your unit). Then plot a course of action that you can be in control of (apologize to those who need apologies and move on from the social dilemma; grab a mop and call a plumber; start cleaning and call an exterminator; start sending out resumes.) Take small steps, plot small wins, and remember that you will make it through the crisis to the other side.

Reflect
Not okay yet, but I will be. And that's okay.
Once the crisis is stabilized, at least momentarily, reflect on the issue. What was the cause? Was there any thing you could have done to prevent it? What can you learn from the situation? Some times there is truly nothing you could have done; not without having some form of future sight. When you find there's nothing you could have done accept it. Give yourself permission to forgive yourself. Even if you could have prevented it, remember that we all make mistakes. And now, you might have an understanding of preventative measures to take avoid this problem in the future. Implement that plan. Preventative measures can also often be used to prevent a situation from growing even more severe than it already is.

So there's my rant / survival guide for general stress without many specifics at all. I hope some one else finds this useful.

Recently I read this quote:

I love being horribly straightforward. I love sending reckless text messages (because how reckless can a form of digitized communication be?) and telling people I love them and telling people they are absolutely magical humans and I cannot believe they really exist. I love saying, Kiss me harder, and You’re a good person, and, You brighten my day. I live my life as straight-forward as possible.
Because one day, I might get hit by a bus.

Maybe it’s weird. Maybe it’s scary. Maybe it seems downright impossible to just be—to just let people know you want them, need them, feel like, in this very moment, you will die if you do not see them, hold them, touch them in some way whether its your feet on their thighs on the couch or your tongue in their mouth or your heart in their hands.
But there is nothing more beautiful than being desperate.
And there is nothing more risky than pretending not to care.

We are young and we are human and we are beautiful and we are not as in control as we think we are. We never know who needs us back. We never know the magic that can arise between ourselves and other humans.
We never know when the bus is coming.”

Rachel C. Lewis

It made me feel a bit better about life.
Here's some music that's been entertaining me:
That's the skirt I made to wear tonight to the (potentially last ever) Chiptunes gaming night / geeks-and-bleeps goth night at Swizzles. Come out and enjoy the music and video games.
Honestly, over the last few months I've had a hard time keeping up with everything, and with recent events I feel like the scene has gone into a deep freeze.

Industrial night is over.
And now Retro night and Geeks & Bleeps at Swizzles will likely end as well.

Going out to events, many are often sparse, few people attend and the scene is quiet.

BUT

I also want to keep supporting the artists I love, and trying to make it out to shows and events.
And I keep going out to other things as well. Because even if goth and industrial have shrunk and dispersed, Ottawa itself has a thriving underground scene. Interesting bands, punk shows, art shows, maker markets, coffee shops, conventions and festivals. All the things I never knew about when I was a teen that led me to think that Ottawa was boring because nothing cool happens here. But cool things are happening and I want to share. And Toronto and Montreal aren't far, well worth the visit when possible, so I'll share significant things about them too.

This blog might not have as many updates for a while. But when I can I'm going to post interesting things. Even if this blog turns into a list of alternative and interesting events, I think I'm okay with that.

Sooo here it is. My current list of neat things to do:

Last night, DJ Leslise (Leslie Hodge) passed away. She was an influential part of the Ottawa alternative scene, especially the goth and industrial scene. She was the leading force behind projects like Zaphod's Industrial night, which ran for over 20 years every Tuesday night at Zaphods Beeblebrox Bar. When that ended she quickly founded the group responsible for Retro Night and Geeks-&-Bleeps Night at Swizzles Bar, which ran every third and fourth Saturday each month. She frequently put the music and scene she loved first; she made it a priority and kept the scene in Ottawa shining.

I didn't know Leslie closely. We were acquaintances, having shared a small conversation here or there. I wish that I had been able to know her better, and I wish that I had been able to express to her my gratitude towards her passion and enthusisasm. I'm glad to say that the last time we spoke I said thank you to her; thanks for all that she'd done for our little Ottawa alternative scene. But I wish that I could have said more; that I could have known her better.

She was a connection between so many people. If it weren't for her and her dedication, I would not have met many of the people I am close to today. I would not be as involved in the Ottawa underground. And I would not belong to the same beautiful subculture and social circle.

Rest in Peace Leslie. Thank you for being an inspirational spirit. May you find a beautiful beyond.
I found some fantastic books, and as usual there were some amazing talented artists and fabulous geek-goth clothing and merch.

The highlight was seeing Marina Sirtis & Jonathan Frakes (Deanna Troi & Will Riker from Star Trek TNG) at a Q&A. They were full of energy, funny and social. They told lots of fun stories and kept us all smiling. Yes, deep down I am a sci fi nerd, probably more geek than goth but I'm alright with that. These sorts of events attract such a wide variety of people, from geeks, to punks, to goth, to moms and kids and elderly. Its a unique opportunity to see so many types of people in one place all reveling in their quirkiness.

I hope you enjoy these photos, just a few of my favorite costumes that I spotted. (If you spot yourself and want credit for your talented costume, or would like the image removed, do let me know!)

G-Anime was a small but fun Convention. I had plenty of Frnehc and Bilingual programming, but I felt that there could have been more in English. I played some fun video games, Giant Jenga, Giant Connect Four, and Just Dance.
...

Just Dance was great, lots of people in fantastic outfit dancing along to ridiculous choreography, I was very very spazzy.

I went to a panel about Mahou Kei, and I've been inspired to start dressing like a spooky Dark Magical Girl (Sailor Saturn is my inspiration~~). I really hope I can work some of the aspects of Mahou Kei into my wardrobe.

Afterwards, at Swizzles's Afterparty, I had a great time dancing and playing pool. Kudrel, a local pro-costume designer and cosplayer, was present and acting as judge for the costume competition. Unfortunately there weren't too many people in costume present. But I won one of the prizes which was exciting!

I definitely need to go out dancing more. And I can't wait to start working on my next costume.

Twiggy PopT.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10611531675164145221noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-637753379974876104.post-60747091473667761402015-01-20T21:17:00.000-05:002015-01-20T21:17:31.410-05:00Things to do:

I spent the last the last two weeks travelling. On our way back there was a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam. I was happy to have some time to explore the city, but I didn't get much of a chance to see many museums. I did do a bit of shopping, and drank the most delicious hot chocolate in a lovely cafe.

Bah humbug and black cats. My preferred Solstice tree looks very much dead.
Maybe with some glittery skulls...

Christmas isn't my thing.

Not in the least bit. I find the culture around it sort of unpleasant. I hate Christmas music (save for the occasional song that is anti-Christmas or makes fun of the occasion or something to that effect). And the traditional decorations make me cringe.

I do however celebrate winter solstice, and I do follow the practice of gift giving, because I like to make people happy. I try very hard to avoid the consumer culture of the Holidays, but I fully support any one's personal beliefs or desires to celebrate as they choose. I just don't like celebrating Christmas traditionally I suppose. Maybe it's just that Christmas starts too early. You start to see decorations in stores by September, and are forced to listen to the bad music through November until December, sometimes earlier. Two full months of this kitschy holiday is too much for me.

One of my coping mechanisms is putting up spooky decorations and using this as an excuse to put up glittering Halloween decorations and dead things covered in glitter. (Dead trees with glitter? I can dig it.) And also to watch movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas. And to wear headphones everywhere in public to avoid the bad music. And I try to be polite and accept people's well wishes for the holidays, they mean no harm.

I also like making crafts. Some of my crafts pertain to creating witchy things for my Winter Solstice Alter, or to give as gifts, or as offerings to people's homes when they invite me. I also like to create little items to hang in doorways and in windows. Anything to invite creative and positive energies into my life when I'm surrounded by glum weather and (what I find to be) an emotionally draining atmosphere.

One cute craft inspiration I found were these "anti-Christmas" ornaments from EvilLilyOriginals. It inspires me to make some of my own "anti-holiday" ornaments. Perhaps they'd make a cute gift for a friend.

As you may already know, Death Disco at Swizzles (which used to be held every saturday night) was official ended a few weeks back.

And now, I've just learned that Industrial Strength Tuesdays at Zaphod's will be officially ending next Tuesday. I've heard that Zaphods may host a retro alternative night and a gamer-goth night (Geeks & Bleeps) on the first and last Tuesday of each month respectively. However, I'm not sure that has been confirmed and presently I believe that the club will simply be closed on Tuesday Nights.

I've heard that there is an alternative / underground music night at Swizzles on Saturdays. I can't confirm that yet though.

I feel great sadness to see these events go. They were the few weekly events keeping goth and industrial alive in Ottawa. The punk scene seems to be doing alright, with the Dominion thriving, House of Targ growing in popularity and Mavericks continuing to host shows. Cafe Decuf has also hosted punk, goth, industrial and other alternative bands in the past. And for now, Zaphods remains open and may still be a potential venue for goth bands. that being said, I feel that the alternative scene in ottawa is slowly shrinking.

Please, if you are located in Ottawa and feel a love for the alternative, come out to events and support local venues, bands and artists. The alternative scene is only what the local community makes of it.

For now, I will continue to scan the horizon for events and shows and keep you updated.

This upcoming weekend is PopExpo. For those geeky-goths in Ottawa, make your way out. Dress up in your most splendid cosplay, lolita, steam-punk or post-apocalyptic attire.

Next week, go out to Zaphod's for the final Industrial Strength Tuesday. Go out and party twice as hard for me, since unfortunate circumstances are keeping me from attending. I'll be there in spirit.

Goodbye to a beloved event.
This costume was so much fun to make, and I got to wear a very odd amount of white.

I had two versions of this outfit, princess mode and full-out vampire queen mode.

For both outfits I wore my white lingerie bodice which is very lacey and frilly and I love wearing it at any chance I get. I also wore a black wig, a pair of Scarecrow-brand vampire fangs, and some DIY accessories such as my icicle crown and my lacey-queen-collar, which doesn't show up great in this. I will be making DIY tutorials for those two items in the future.

More details after the break!

For the princess version I wore a white crinoline/tutu. It is somewhat see-through so I wore frilly blue bloomers underneath. I also wore white fishnets with black tights underneath to help add contrast (and give me some extra warmth). I wore plain black boots, since I didn't want to splurge on new shoes just for this outfit. ... Maybe I will acquire white boots one day, but not today.
Princess mode was for going out earlier in the week to a goth-club night.

Also shown in the princess mode is my white velvet bolero which used to be a wedding dress. That is the most fun part of this outfit, the DIY bolero and skirt. I found a cheap velvet wedding dress from a thrift store. It was hideous and shapeless. I cut it in half and reconstructed it to create the bolero and the skirt that I wore in my queen outfit. Queen-Mode was worn for a low-key Halloween party.

What did you dress up as for halloween? What did you do?
Did you dress up at all, or are you the type of goth who sees Halloween as just a typical day / the one day of the year when your daily wardrobe is "normal" ?

Cheers,
I'm not sure what I'll be for Halloween this year. I'm not even sure if I'm going to dress up and go out...

But I do have the sudden desire to craft and make sparkly crowns and beaded capes. So I think I'll start making an evil ice queen costume. Maybe I'll buy fangs and be an ice vampire.

So this weekend I will be making a trip to the craft store to buy paint and sparkles and rhinestones.

What are you going to be for Halloween? Any plans, are you going out?

This weekend I attended the Ottawa Geek Market. The Geek Market allows local vendors and artists to sell their goods to the nerd community. The vendors included toys, art, costumes, clothing, books, comics, manga, vintage video games, new video games, board games, card games, LEGO, and more. Cosplay is encouraged, and many steampunks, goths and lolitas were also in attendance. It was great seeing some of the local pro-cosplayers such as Kudrel and Detailed-Illusion. Several panels and workshops were held, such as "cosplay ettiquette" and "plushie making."

There was also a gameboard section where you try out all kinds of strange games and even play giant games (like giant jenga!). AND 8-bit Bazaar was there with screens and consoles galore with all kinds of different games.
The Bernadette boots combine the worst features of boots and sandals into an unfortunate franken-shoe.

The thing is, I love combat boots. And Doc Martens normally produce fantastic looking boots and shoes that I would love to wear. But these are not that. These are combat boots that look like they wear half eaten by a dog, with large sections missing. And then someone decided to pass that off as a sandal. I'm really disappointed that Doc Martens would produce such an unfortunate shoe. Not that they are the only company to produce the awful design...

Usually, I'm not a fan of sandals. They do not protect your feet; they generally provide an uncomfortable, flimsy walking experience; I hate not being able to wear socks; etc. But they do have some upsides, and in the right context (at the beach or pool) they aren't a horrible thing. They let your feet breath and are great for the summer.

Boots, on the other hand, are my go to shoe always. They provide ultimate sturdy travelling experience; they are perfect protection for clubs and shows; and provide warmth on cold days. Unfortunately they do not breath (prepare to suffer in the summer); once wet they take forever to dry; and if you wear them to the beach they will be awful and fill with sand.

These awful shoes/sandals/boots seem to combine the worst aspects from both shoe types. They don't look like they breath well, they look like they'd take forever to dry one wet and fill with sand easily (so the beach is out). They also look flimsy and hard to walk and run in, provide no foot protection (so no good for clubs and shows either).

Do you see my issue with these?

Personally, I would never wear these. I just really can't see these being comfortable. But hey, that's just me.

Would you wear them? Is there an upside to these shoes that I'm missing?
Let me know in the comments!
